Materials engineering determines how structures and products behave under heat, load, vibration, fatigue, corrosion and extreme operating environments. It is therefore fundamental to aerospace, automotive, nuclear, renewable-energy and advanced-manufacturing industries.

The pathway includes metals, composites, polymers, ceramics, nanomaterials, coatings, additive manufacturing and material-characterisation techniques. Aerospace and motorsport applications place particular emphasis on strength-to-weight ratio, fatigue life, temperature resistance and manufacturability.

Students may enter through materials science, metallurgy, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, chemistry, physics or specialised manufacturing programmes.

Career Direction

Careers

Materials engineers develop, select, test and analyse materials used in engineered systems. Careers can focus on research, manufacturing, structural integrity, failure investigation, quality, composites, metallurgy or advanced processing.

Specialists are particularly important where weight, durability, temperature, corrosion or safety requirements are demanding, including aircraft structures, turbine systems, motorsport, batteries, nuclear systems and renewable-energy equipment.
