Duration

Typically completed within the first 2 years of graduate residency

Programme Overview

Caltech's Master of Science in Applied Mechanics provides advanced education in the theoretical, computational and experimental foundations of mechanics.

The programme is offered through the Department of Mechanical and Civil Engineering and develops depth in applied mechanics together with a strong foundation in mathematics, engineering and the physical sciences.

Students complete an Applied Mechanics core alongside mathematics, engineering and research electives and additional advanced electives.

Areas of study can include solid mechanics, structures, materials, computational mechanics, continuum mechanics and related interdisciplinary engineering topics.

The MS is normally awarded to students who intend to continue toward the PhD in Applied Mechanics. Admission with the MS as the final degree objective is available only in exceptional cases.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have completed a bachelor's degree or equivalent before beginning graduate study.

Entering students are expected to have a strong undergraduate background in mathematics, physics and engineering.

Applicants who did not specialise in applied mechanics as undergraduates may still be considered if they have suitable preparation in engineering, science or mathematics.

The graduate application requires academic transcripts, three letters of recommendation, a CV and application essays.

There is no fixed minimum GPA for Mechanical and Civil Engineering admission. Academic performance, research experience, recommendations, technical preparation and alignment with Caltech research areas are considered collectively.

GRE submission is optional for Mechanical and Civil Engineering applicants.

English-Language Requirements

Applicants are expected to read, write and speak English and understand spoken English.

For applicants whose native language is not English, or who have not received a degree from an institution where English is the primary language of instruction, Caltech encourages evidence of strong English proficiency.

Accepted evidence includes:
TOEFL
IELTS
Pearson PTE Academic
Duolingo English Test
Other recognised certified English-language proficiency examinations

Caltech does not currently specify a universal minimum graduate admission score.

International students admitted without an English-medium university degree are evaluated for English proficiency before the academic year begins and may be required to take English as a Second Language instruction.

Scholarship Information

Caltech offers several forms of graduate financial support. Institute Fellowships Fellowships may provide tuition support together with a graduate stipend. Research Assistantships Eligible students may receive financial support while conducting research under faculty supervision. Teaching Assistantships Graduate assistants may receive tuition awards and stipends in exchange for approved teaching or laboratory responsibilities. External Fellowships Caltech encourages eligible graduate students to pursue external fellowships and scholarships from government, industry and professional organisations. Caltech reports that more than 98% of admitted graduate students receive merit-based financial-support packages covering tuition and providing a stipend. However, terminal master's students can be an exception and may be self-supported. Because the Applied Mechanics MS is normally earned while progressing toward the PhD, applicants should confirm their individual funding arrangement when admitted.
