Programme Overview

The University of Cambridge MPhil in Engineering for Sustainable Development provides advanced professional education for engineers addressing environmental, social and economic sustainability challenges.

The programme combines quantitative sustainability methods with systems thinking, management and wider social and policy perspectives.

Students complete core sustainability modules, specialist electives, management study, field activities and an individual dissertation.

The programme encourages students to analyse engineering decisions in the context of environmental limits, social needs, economic systems and long-term sustainable development.

It is intended particularly for engineers and other technically trained graduates seeking leadership roles involving sustainability and responsible infrastructure or technology development.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should normally hold at least a good UK 2:1 honours degree or an equivalent international qualification.

The programme is intended primarily for applicants from engineering backgrounds.

Suitable preparation can also include science or another closely related quantitative discipline.

An integrated Master's-level engineering qualification such as an MEng is preferred for UK applicants.

Relevant postgraduate professional engineering experience is desirable.

The programme permits appropriate combinations of academic and professional references.

Cambridge Trust Scholarships Eligible Master's applicants may compete for full-cost and part-cost Cambridge Trust awards. Gates Cambridge Scholarships Eligible applicants from outside the United Kingdom may apply for Gates Cambridge funding. Cambridge Colleges Individual colleges offer additional postgraduate scholarships and bursaries. External Funding Government, employer and professional scholarship schemes may also support eligible students.
