Job Description
The Staff Motor Thermal Engineer will define the cooling and lubrication strategy for Rivian’s next-generation electric drive units. The position combines zero-dimensional and one-dimensional system modelling with detailed three-dimensional CFD. The engineer will optimise direct-oil cooling of shafts, rotors, stators and end windings and correlate analytical predictions with dynamometer and physical hardware testing.
Responsibilities
• Develop lubrication and thermal models for electric motors and drive units.
• Lead the design and optimisation of shaft, rotor, stator and end-winding oil cooling.
• Define thermal and lubrication requirements for motors, inverters and transmission interfaces.
• Perform system-level modelling and high-fidelity three-dimensional CFD.
• Develop motor-dynamometer and drive-unit validation plans.
• Collect test data and correlate physical results with analytical models.
• Balance power density, efficiency, reliability and thermal-management requirements.
• Collaborate with motor-design, controls, testing and manufacturing teams.
Eligibility
• Bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering, Thermal Sciences or a related discipline.
• At least seven years of experience in electric-vehicle powertrain lubrication and thermal management.
• Advanced understanding of rotating machinery, convective heat transfer and dielectric-oil fluid dynamics.
• Experience using thermal simulations and physical testing to validate engineering designs.
